Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

His passing follows less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her American tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
