Community Members Pursuing Clarity Regarding Hazardous Substances Locations

A local mother and Fraser's father faced heartbreaking news in 2018 when their young son their baby was diagnosed with a uncommon form of childhood cancer.

24 months of gruelling treatment ensued, comprising cancer medications, radiation therapy, and biological therapies before a cellular therapy. The young boy, by age three, made a remarkable improvement from the surgery, with medical staff confirming the illness in recovery.

During this period that Alison, aged thirty-six, began seeking answers. She could not stop thinking about comments made by hospital staff at the time of her son’s diagnosis. “It keeps us up at night wondering how Fraser got his disease,” a specialist had informed her.

“We're constantly wondering wondering how our son got his disease,” a doctor had informed her.

Past Events

The botched disposal of enormous amounts of hazardous substances after the shutdown of the town's primary employer in Corby in 1979 had “widely acknowledged,” said Alison. A legal proceeding linked the local authority's mismanagement of the site to a string of developmental issues in local children during the previous decades.

Increasingly, Alison started to connect the case to her own. “[His illness] is not inherited,” she explained. “What could cause this? … It must be down to the community. So many children [with] cancer.

“Everybody in this town knows someone who’s got a minor [with] illness. That's unusual.”

Community Action

Alison and Andy started to reach out to more parents in their community with comparable experiences – featuring some of Alison's past schoolmates at their former educational institution – and the organization began compiling thorough information on those impacted. They now spearhead a movement representing about many parents with situations of pediatric illness starting from 1988.

The group has been pressuring the town council to examine any relationships between instances of youth disease in Corby and the closure of the plant. At the end of this month, medical experts are set to publish their study of whether the town has had a unusually high rate of instances of youth disease for its inhabitants of the local community.

“Our only goal is to attempt to safeguard subsequent residents so they won't experience the pain that we've experienced,” said Gaffney.

Previous Cases

The decision in the 2009 civil claim recognized that, between the 1980s and 1990s, millions of tonnes of contaminated materials from the industrial facility were moved “typically” from the one area to a specific location in the opposite end – with “significant amounts” of hazardous materials carried and dropped on local thoroughfares and “large volumes” of particulate matter produced by the reclamation.

Nonetheless, it also referenced findings from the Environment Agency in 1997 that identified accumulations of toxic substances that had been deposited at this location were later taken away in “significant amounts”.

Additional Issues

Alison maintains contaminated materials was not only dumped at the main disposal area but in different locations of the community. Recently, she approved a “major step forward” after North Northamptonshire council said it would analyze land that could be polluted and study where contaminated substances was dumped.

The mother said government representatives acknowledged in the meeting that they did not know where the areas of hazardous substances could be. “They explained: ‘We don’t know where these locations are. Documentation is missing, there's no data available.’”

Public Endorsement

The government declaration was also welcomed by a community member, a pastoral lead at a elementary institution, whose nine-year-old daughter, her daughter, was found to have blood cancer in recent months.

“I needed to cut my little girl's hair because her hair was coming out from the treatments she had to use to eliminate her illness. So actually it’s in our interest, it’s in the child's wellbeing [for the council] to reveal that data,” she said.

“There are so many individuals in the area that have been found to have pediatric illness and I just feel it’s cannot be dismissed – it demands examination. This is unusual.”

Personal Stories

Meg Lyons, 31, who works in sales and now resides elsewhere, said households earned “full transparency and transparency” from the government.

Her 11-year-old sister, Eve, passed away on 24 June 2017 after being found to have a rare bone cancer at the age of nine. The girl, who fundraised for medical research, was “among the charming, humorous and caring” people, the sister recalled.

Her parent recalls the consequence of the cessation of the steel plant on the community, the woman stated. “She said you couldn’t put your hand in ahead of you because [of] the red ash.”

“This situation has persisted since around about my youth. It's too long and it is negligence toward the local residents.”

Historical Connections

Another family member, Maggie Mahon, was among numerous families participating in the 2009 claim against the then Corby council after her baby was had a congenital issue. Her partner, the man, was a member of the truck operators responsible for transporting materials from the industrial site. Their experience was shown in a media production, and illustrated the mother removing the dust from her husband’s jeans.

The campaign leader said the campaign group has been contacted by whistleblowers who were participating in the disposal of waste in the area.
