Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after the ex-president charged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be arrested and sentenced "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.

The Recording That Sparked the Debate

The clip, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly served in defense or intelligence capacities.

"As we did, you all took an vow to safeguard and defend this national charter," the representatives affirmed in the short video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that violate the law or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Angry Reaction

The video message seemed to prompt a heated reply from the ex-president.

On later in the week, Trump published on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another message, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Leaders React

Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader released a combined declaration condemning the comments.

"Partisan aggression has no position in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all acted our United States with exceptional national pride and distinction. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the safety of these officials and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay delete these radical social media posts and withdraw his violent discourse before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.

Lawmakers' Strong Reaction

The officials who were featured in the video also published a declaration.

"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this nation and made an oath to safeguard and uphold the constitution of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental obligation."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the ex-president's requests for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for moral clarity."

More Governmental Comments

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's comments and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is requesting the execution of government members."

He added: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this immediately and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of the legislature telling military personnel to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in American history."

The Republican leader also reportedly informed journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and establish all that."

White House Response

During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a journalist, "Does the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Absolutely not."

"We should understand about what the former president is addressing," the official declared. "There are current representatives of the American legislature who coordinated to orchestrate a digital communication to members of the US military, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the president's lawful orders."

She said: "The purity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
