The Oscar-nominated actor the celebrated Diane Ladd left us 89 years old.
This actor, with credits included Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, died at her home at her Ojai, California home. This announcement was announced via an announcement shared by her daughter, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern, her daughter.
Her daughter, who appeared with her mother in various films including Wild at Heart, described her as “my incredible hero as well as my special gift being my mom”, noting that she was by her side during her final moments.
“She was the greatest grandmother, mother, daughter, star, artist as well as compassionate soul that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she expressed. “We were lucky to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”
The start of her career saw small roles in television programs like Gunsmoke and the seventies featured her performing with Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.
During that year, the year 1974, she performed with Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s praised film the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance landed Ladd an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress.
Throughout the 1980s, she starred in the thriller Black Widow, a suspense story and humorous film National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and also took part in the show Alice, a sitcom derived from Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the subsequent decade, she earned a further best supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her performance in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart where she acted as the mom of her biological child the character played by Dern. The next year she received an additional nod for her acting in Rambling Rose, another movie which included Dern.
“This was the picture that the late Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she brought Laura and I to England for a royal premiere and a celebration dedicated to us,” Ladd shared of Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, taking our hands, with tears, seeing us act.”
That decade featured performances in comedy Cemetery Club bringing her back with Ellen Burstyn, Primary Colors, a satirical film, starring John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she acted as Laura Dern’s mom again. Those years also brought her TV award nominations for performances in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, the show Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.
She kept appearing alongside her daughter in comedy drama the film Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project Inland Empire and Mike White’s dark comedy series the program Enlightened. She was also seen alongside actress Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in that movie and Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.
Subsequent TV appearances consisted of the series Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.
Ladd also wrote and helmed the comedy the movie Mrs Munck featuring Diane Ladd and ex-husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a talented star,” she said. “It was a privilege to guide him on a project. Actually, I stand as the only woman in recorded history to direct her ex-husband. I make a joke: ‘I say ladies, if you seek payback, guide your former spouse.’ Though I’m just teasing.”
She was additionally the third cousin of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a major inspiration throughout my life”.
Back in 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a pulmonary condition and told she only had half a year left but made a full recovery once her daughter moved her to another medical facility.
“If you can take your pain and not let it back up similar to a wound, rather utilize it to discover, to illuminate the way for you and those around, then you are triumphing,” Ladd said.
