A tragic blast at a law enforcement facility in the Kashmir region under Indian control has resulted in the deaths of nine persons and harm to thirty-two more, according to official statements.
The incident occurred when a cache of confiscated explosives inadvertently exploded during handling procedures.
The blast occurred on Friday evening at the Nowgam security post, where explosive materials taken from the Faridabad area in the northern state of Haryana province were being held provisionally.
Regional police chief stated that the blast materials were pending scientific analysis when a "very unfortunate" incident during handling resulted in their detonation at approximately 11:20 PM local.
Police authorities verified that this was an "inadvertent blast" and not a terrorist attack. "Alternative theories regarding the reason of this incident is unneeded," highlighted the law enforcement head during a press briefing.
The security post suffered severe damage from the blast, with nearby constructions also being influenced by the strong explosion.
Multiple vehicles were "engulfed in flames and turned into burned shells, with debris scattered across the area," according to official reports.
"The intensity of the blast was such that some human remains were recovered from nearby houses, approximately 100-200 metres away the security post," mentioned an police contact.
Most of the casualties were police officers, along with scientific examination staff, two evidence documentation specialists, and a clothing professional who was with the team.
The territory's Lieutenant Governor conveyed condolences and announced that an inquiry had been ordered into the tragic incident.
"I have commissioned a investigation to establish the origin of the inadvertent detonation. Deeply anguished by the death of valuable individuals due to profoundly sorrowful accidental blast at Nowgam police station in Srinagar. My condolences to the mourning loved ones. I pray for speedy recovery of the wounded," expressed the authority on online channels.
