Fury Erupts as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Backlash

Figures from both sides of the political spectrum and the entertainment world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the tragic passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Online Post

Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Developments and Detention

Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. It is reported his bail was set at a significant amount.

A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures

The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.

“What a disgusting and despicable comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the remarks. She pointed to previous comments from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any worse?"

The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

A number of GOP elected officials also voiced disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.

Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared others in his political party to justify the comments.

Reiner's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.

"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation after the killing of a different individual.

An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal

Providing a element of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
