Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
