Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
