Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD issued surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
