Pep Guardiola has admitted feeling "shame" following an exchange with a TV crew member in the wake of Manchester City's 2-1 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday.
At full time, an emotional Guardiola entered the St James’ Park pitch and had heated discussions with the referee, Sam Barrott and Magpies midfielder Bruno Guimarães, and also touched the broadcast crew's equipment.
"I said sorry," Guardiola stated. "I feel embarrassed, ashamed, when I see it. I don’t like it. I apologised after one second to the cameraman. That's just me. With a thousand matches under my belt I’m not a perfect person, errors happen."
"One thing is certain, I defend any team and my club, that’s for sure. Why I support my squad is no doubt – based on my career to clinch the title we have to do 100 points, 98 points, or we fall short."
City are third and are seven behind the Gunners following their fourth loss this campaign. "Losing four games out of 12 we have to improve a lot," he conceded. "Technically, we can to win everything."
When questioned if this meant the quadruple could be achieved, he responded: "As a seasoned reporter, have you ever heard me about the quadruple last winter when we won the quadruple? No."
On the subject of his talk with Guimarães, the coach explained: "I've known him a long time and post-match, even at the Etihad, we converse. We often meet and we get along well. I love it. I’m an emotional guy, I like discussing and move my hands."
Guardiola would not be concerned if an opposition manager addressed his squad immediately after a game. "Not if you talk with respect like I always have done, it's fine," he said, before referencing Barrott. "The referee was involved throughout the match, he was involved. Goodness, he was involved."
The team felt aggrieved that Barrott or the VAR denied a spot-kick for a Fabian Schär challenge against Foden, and doubted Bruno's positioning on Barnes' goal Newcastle’s 70th-minute winner. Pictures published later show he was level.
Guardiola will take charge his century in Europe against Bayer Leverkusen this week. "It’s quite good, showing we compete annually," he commented.
The club has ten points from four matches in the group, while Leverkusen have five.
