Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year left on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack

The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant boost to United’s attacking options. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

Securing the German international comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
