New Year Revelers Told to Bundle Up with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK

Meteorologists are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snow expected over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Go Ahead Despite Alerts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to proceed, a contrast to last year's postponement. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," noted the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be cold, making additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Set to Plummet Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Advisories Activated

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather could to lead to significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a expected uptick in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
