The Nigerian government has stated that it played a role in the American military operation carried out on Christmas Day, as stated by the country's foreign minister this week.
Former President Donald Trump previously declared the strikes targeting Islamic State militants in the northwestern region of Nigeria after a period of criticizing the group for attacking Christian communities.
Nigeria's foreign minister, Yusuf Tuggar, indicated that he had held "extensive" discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio both before and after the airstrike.
He also noted that Nigeria's leader, Bola Tinubu, had given the "go-ahead" for the airstrikes. Tuggar left the door open for additional operations, describing them as an "continuous effort" that would potentially include international partners.
"This operation had no connection to a specific faith," Tuggar insisted in an discussion with the BBC. "The objective is to do with targeting militants who have been killing Nigerians."
Shortly following the Christmas Day operation, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth warned of additional military actions against ISIS locations in north-western Nigeria.
Hegseth characterized the action as part of a mission to stop the killing of Christians, a position reiterated by the former president. In a social media post, Hegseth stated, "He was explicit... the murder of innocent Christians in Nigeria must end. More to come..."
The holiday military operation were hailed by some supporters of the ex-leader, who had been calling for a forceful response to the attacks against Christians.
