No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
