New York state AG has rolled out a fresh reporting form asking residents to provide visual evidence of immigration raids throughout New York. This step comes just a shortly after a major enforcement action rattled NYC's Chinatown, triggering widespread demonstrations.
A lawmaker disclosed during a midweek briefing that four citizens were arrested and detained for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Protests broke out in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Each citizen is entitled to exist without intimidation," state officials stated in a release.
"For those who saw and captured immigration enforcement recently, I ask you to provide that footage with us. We are pledged to examining these submissions and investigating any violations of law."
The portal includes fields to send photos and videos of the operation, as well as a section to note where it occurred. Prior to sending, users must tick a option that states that "the office could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, such as in a legal proceeding or government document."
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say included over fifty federal agents, happened in a famous district of the city where fake purses, items, goods and additional items are sold daily in large quantities – frequently to sightseers.
Videos of the incident depict numerous masked and armed personnel zip-tying and detaining a person, and shoving away onlookers. Throngs of locals pursued the personnel through the streets. An military-style transport was also seen rolling through the urban roads.
In a Wednesday press conference organized with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, said that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where four American citizens should be arrested for no reason." He said the individuals were let go on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman remarked. "This is a military-style operation to incite tension. It is purely a justification to provoke conflict for federal officials to deploy the armed forces to stop violence that they themselves caused."
Anger over the ICE raid quickly spread – every political contenders denounced the operation, including NY's governor.
"Once again, the Trump administration chooses oppressive displays that create fear, not safety. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate wrote.
The city's immigrant rights groups voiced concern too.
"Immigration agents targeted the neighborhood with tactical trucks, covered personnel and protective equipment to target local sellers trying to make a living. This action had no connection to citizen protection and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and communities," said the head of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE policy prohibits the arrest of American nationals and the organization has stated it will not take into custody American nationals. However, external research has found that numerous US citizens have been detained unlawfully by ICE during the period of the present government.
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in New York and across the US recently.
An October operation in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the current administration. Rallies opposing federal operations are commonplace as are claims of force and cruel conditions.
