A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation battling rampant crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities reported the 40-year-old presenter was approached by a trio of assailants, one of whom opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.
The motive of the shooting remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended have taken place, police said.
Authorities indicated that Stock was targeted as he was exiting a premises close to the city center landmark.
He had spent several hours at the building managing the setup of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, according to reports.
"Authorities believe the victim was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they shot at him before running from the location on foot," a police statement said.
Security camera video reportedly captured a man with dreadlocks and clad in what appeared to be a security uniform shooting on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ sought to escape after he was shot but collapsed across the street.
It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and nothing was taken during the assault.
Key evidence, like bullet casings, were found at the location.
Police have appealed members of the public who may have have information to come forward.
"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the shooting, and officers have been attempting to locate them to find their destination," remarked an authority figure.
His sister, Nicole Stock, expressed the relatives are devastated to process his death.
"Words fail me. I am shattered," she stated.
"It is clear he was a voice for many people. He addressed issues courageously about topics not many people were willing to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."
She requested the public to avoid sharing disturbing footage from the incident, saying this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's three sons.
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that aired on a popular local digital satellite entertainment channel.
Beyond his media career, Stock was involved in various commercial activities, including private security, offering elite guarding services and protecting high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also reportedly involved in building administration and assisted with property reclaimations.
His death has caused national trauma and prompted an wave of remembrances from his fans, the authorities and various organizations.
A senior figure remarked he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's untimely death.
"He was forthright without fear or favour. He even challenged me and my policies as a public official. He was a true embodiment of who we should be," he stated.
