Significant Upheaval Projected: Britain's Most Severe Climate Crisis Scenarios Unveiled by Experts

The most severe projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been mapped by experts, including a blistering 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 2-metre rise in sea levels. Another scenario envisions a decline of 6C in temperature following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and energy demand.

Plausible Events, Not Forecasts

These impacts, a number of which are linked to climate tipping points, are considered as unlikely but plausible. The researchers explained that these models plugged a hole in risk assessment that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for catastrophic possibilities.

"The severe weather events we have mapped are not forecasts, but they are possible," stated Nigel Arnell who oversaw the research. "Britain has been making preparations without the methods to test against extreme possibilities. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to get ready for future conditions they wish to avoid, but must not overlook."

A Range of Harsh Climate Projections

Another collection of worst-case scenarios details the potential extent of harsh climate between now and the year 2100. These suggest that thermometer readings could skyrocket in some months by up to 6C higher than average, while precipitation could be three times standard measurements.

The chance of the catastrophic events occurring remains uncertain due to uncertainty about what steps will be enacted to address global heating and how the climate system will react. This approach was compared to security threat evaluations or stress tests for economic stability.

Key Outcome Highlights

  • Four-Degree Warming: Worldwide averages rising well above 4C by 2100 could transpire if international cooperation breaks down or if vicious cycles including the Amazon basin perishing unleash its vast reserves of carbon. This would result in extreme and prolonged heat domes and droughts hitting the UK in summer.
  • AMOC Shutdown: A critical sea current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is losing strength and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A collapse beginning in 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Agriculture would be severely challenged and freshwater availability would be completely altered," noted Arnell.
  • Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if glaciers in the polar regions disintegrate quickly, flooding coastal cities and towns. Unlike the other scenarios, this possibility is already understood by coastal engineers.
  • Aerosol Effect: Temperatures could also be driven up by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is sharply cut. This paradoxical outcome occurs because pollution particles from burning coal reflect sunlight from warming the ground.

Planning for the Unthinkable

The worst-case scenarios could be used to inform the construction of long-term infrastructure, such as new towns, energy plants and flood defences. Understanding these future hazards could also accelerate the drive to reduce fossil fuel emissions.

The analysis formulated the extreme models using a combination of observed and historical experience, digital projections and established principles. The scenarios omit international cascading effects including the global food shortages and resource wars.

The research was initiated as part of a national climate resilience programme. Independent analyses have cautioned that too little consideration was being given to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

An independent advisory body has said that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and examine the dangers for 4C. Previous adaptation plans have been criticised as being "very weak" by some observers.

A national response said: "Global warming is at the center of this government’s agenda, both adapting for the future and establishing itself as a low-carbon economy. It is vital that the UK is prepared for the effects."
