Similar to the recent storm swept through the northwest the prior day, City overwhelmed Manchester United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a emphatic 3-0 victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their championship potential as they strengthened their standing at the top of the table.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This scoreline represented consecutive WSL losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since May 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the top team with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

The Red Devils' ability to manage domestic and continental soccer with a small roster has been a hotly discussed subject since they secured entry to the UCL. Looking at the schedule, it always seemed this was the matchday that would fully examine this fortitude. Regrettably for the visitors, they appeared tired throughout, the historic win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had tried to make changes with a handful of adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided freshness, although the exclusion of the on-form Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

The hosts, in contrast, have no similar fitness concerns. The City coach made one adjustment from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

The storm clouds started to gather for Skinner and his squad from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the strength from Manchester City whose energetic attack manipulated and tore United open with a sublime initial 45 minutes showing that saw them score three goals in under half an hour.

They increased their cushion with another pair of goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was allowed to advance through the midfield from the back, the field widened for City. The prominent Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right before sending a pinpoint low cross for Bunny Shaw to force home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a rapid change in the ball saw Lauren Hemp afforded the room to drive a shot home from range.

Second Half

The clearest adjustment came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came most likely to score, rattling the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to record a solitary shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have extended their lead when a superb Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the hosts. After failing to defeat any opponent who finished above them last season, City's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a favorable situation after nine games.
