The United Kingdom Set to Employ Frozen Russian Funds to Support Ukraine's War Effort

The UK is set to progress with using the entire amount of immobilized Russian holdings to support the Ukrainian war effort, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has announced.

In a joint statement, the heads of state of the United Kingdom, the French Republic, and the Federal Republic of Germany stated that this coordinated action would escalate tension on Russia's leader Vladimir Putin and compel Russia to engage in negotiations.

They further noted that the initiative would be carried out in strong partnership with the United States.

United Kingdom sanctions have blocked in excess of £25bn of Russia's funds since Moscow launched its comprehensive attack against Ukraine in 2022. Yet, previously, money provided to Ukraine using Russia's assets had solely been sourced from profits and interest earned on them.

Sir Keir assured Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky that the Britain, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany were aligned in their aim to advance efforts toward using the complete amount of the immobilized Moscow's national holdings to end the war.

He added that further measures soon would heighten the tension on the Russian government.

This declaration comes after European Union leaders met in the Danish capital previously to discuss utilizing immobilized Russia's assets for a 140-billion-euro credit to the Ukrainian nation.

Recently, US President Donald Trump encouraged G7 allies to take or employ immobilized Russia's funds, as reported by news outlets.

The total of frozen Russian holdings in the European Union is calculated to be approximately €211bn.

Leader Zelensky urges Britain's Sir Keir Starmer to join the Purl program

The Russian government executed large-scale aerial attacks across Ukraine on recently, causing power cuts in significant regions of Ukraine's capital, the city, and several other zones.

Two people were fatally injured and at least 20 people were injured in the strike, the Ukrainian government stated.

In a update on an online platform subsequent to the strike, Zelensky commented that the strategic strike aimed at public and utility structures.

"What's needed is not empty words but concrete steps - from the America, the European Union, and the seven nations - in delivering defense mechanisms and implementing penalties," he stated.

"All penalty impositions weakens Russia's war machine," Zelensky noted, in a separate post.

Also on Friday, Zelensky informed media outlets he would urge Sir Keir to join the weapons procurement scheme, under which alliance members acquire weapons from the US to give to Ukraine.

While praising the Britain's firm backing for Kyiv, he remarked it should demonstrate clearly that it would engage in the program, as well as impose further sanctions on the Russian Federation.
