This year's NBA season starts now, signaling the first time in a ten years that Aussie two most prominent hoops names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are teamless.
Their absence indicates a transition period, as Boomers’ backcourt duo Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels emerge as essential players for playoff aspirants, with recently signed huge contracts making them some of the country's top athletic earners.
They aren't the only ones. A group of 14 Aussies are expected to play for playing time around the league, ranging from veteran centres Jock Landale and Duop Reath, emerging wings in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising draftees like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Following lengthy discussions with the Chicago Bulls, the guard finally inked his new deal worth $100m (A$153 million) over four seasons last month. It’s a huge contract for the Melburnian, but in league standards it is cheap for Giddey’s position and profile as a lead playmaker. Hesitation for Chicago’s front office to pay top dollar means the young star enters this year with much to prove.
Having been traded by the Thunder at the start of last season, he observed as his old team charged to the NBA championship in his absence. As the Bulls look to reach the postseason in the weaker East, he will have to demonstrate his scoring and defensive skills are starter-worthy or else he may slide towards the league's outskirts.
The guard signed the identical contract as Giddey recently, and after his most-improved player award last season, the Hawks player's trajectory has skyrocketed in Atlanta following his departure from the Pelicans. He is now lauded as one of the league’s best defensive specialists, and led the league in steals with three per game – over one full takeaway per game higher than the total of second place.
Performing next to flamboyant Trae Young in the Hawks, the youngster can be effective this campaign as a playmaking option and defensive stopper as long as the Hawks make the playoffs. But if he can improve his long-range game, which was below league average last year, and continue to develop his passing and attacking, he could become one of the league’s most well-rounded players.
Indiana wing the rookie has emerged as a crowd favorite in the state following a succession of highlight-reel slam dunks in exhibition games. His acrobatics prompted league figure Pat Beverley to label him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a long time”, and an invite to the mid-season dunk contest could be a possibility.
After logging just eight minutes per contest over 50 appearances in his rookie campaign, the ex- college player is in the running for a Pacers lineup that might lean towards young players following injury to star playmaker Tyrese Haliburton.
Playmaker Proctor fell in the NBA Draft down to the 49th pick, where playoff hopefuls the Cavaliers picked him. The Cavs are favourites to reach the NBA finals from the East, so it would be unusual for a rookie taken in the second round to see much playing minutes. But the Sydney product has seen minutes in pre-season, and his pro-level shooting offers him a opportunity to contribute.
Veteran centre Jock Landale has a opportunity to claim the starting five spot in the Grizzlies given top prospect Zach Edey will miss the start of the season after a surgical procedure.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the experienced reserve to youthful big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could see regular minutes if the team become in the hunt. His teammate Matisse Thybulle is likely to be deployed as a defensive specialist in a reserve role.
In Charlotte, Josh Green’s off-season shoulder procedure has resulted in him without a timeline to come back. The player still has a contract for next season, but will not want to give his colleagues at the rebuilding Hornets too much head start. And injury has already slowed Dante Exum, who has a knee problem and has been absent for important pre-season chances in Dallas.
Then there are those who are not expected to see a lot of, if any, game action this season. Veteran Joe Ingles is returned in Minnesota, but appears to be primarily a mentor keeping Anthony Edwards focused.
Rocco Zikarsky is expected to be nurtured by the Wolves through their G-League team. Other rookies Lachlan Olbrich in the Bulls and Alex Toohey for the Golden State Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the more seasoned Luke Travers will be hoping to win minutes alongside his compatriot for the Cavs.
If there were any doubts Mills was planning to end his career, he addressed it with a training clip shared on his accounts recently, showing the 37-year-old is still sharp and determined on securing another league deal.
Simmons' intentions is uncertain after an off-season in Australia, angling and using with a football. Although he took to Instagram last month to deny rumors he was done, the 29-year-old – an All Star as recently as 2021 – has not yet surface.
