A extensive search and recovery operation is actively in progress in the Caribbean region for a duo of missing boats loaded with aid cargo traveling from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Maritime Search Operations Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than nine sailors, per a military release.

The vessels had been expected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their docking, the navy said.

Context of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the nation endures widespread power outages across the country.

"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and signalling equipment," an official associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Earlier Aid Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had carried 14 tons of relief supplies to the island.

That ship, called "a new Granma" after the yacht in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar panels, drugs, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.

Broader Political Context

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.

International organizations have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with over 50,000 operations cancelled in Cuba because of power shortages.

Foreign policy tensions have been ramped up over the past months, with statements from various officials underscoring the complex state of diplomatic ties.

Reacting to previous proposals, a prominent Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations commenced, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.

The naval forces stated it was committed to using all of the resources at its reach to discover the boats and guarantee the well-being of the crews.

To date, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
